Coverage Area & Population: Deer Mountain Fire Protection District currently handles the third-largest call volume in Fremont County, behind Cañon City and Florence. DMFPD covers approximately 236 square miles of rural Fremont County and provides mutual aid throughout the surrounding area. The District protects approximately 1,750 full-time residents and 440 seasonal residents.

Facilities & Staffing Structure: The District operates 3 fire stations. Station 1 is staffed with EMTs and firefighters on duty from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday. Emergency response outside weekday business hours and at the other two stations relies on on-call personnel. Active personnel consist of two full-time staff members, 25 volunteer firefighters, three part-time EMT, and three part-time drivers.

Call Volume & Demand Trends:

• The District responded to 306 emergency calls in 2025. As of September 2026, we are at 317 calls for the year.
• Medical-related emergencies account for 63% of all call responses, and medical calls have grown by 20% year-over-year with a larger increase trending for 2026.
• Currently, we run 50 percent of the calls during business hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (8 hours), and 50 % of our calls from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. (16 hours).
• Adults aged 65 and older represent a key demographic and are twice as likely to call 911 for a medical emergency compared to younger adults.
